The Root Center in Human Design

The Root center is the source of pressure and drive. It holds gates 53, 60, 52, 19, 39, 41, 58, 38 and 54.

The Root center sits at the base of the chart. It is associated with pressure, drive and the push to get things done. It holds nine gates: 53, 60, 52, 19, 39, 41, 58, 38 and 54. It is a motor center, which means it can supply energy to the Throat or other centers.

What it governs

The Root is about pressure and adrenaline. Gate 53 is about starting new cycles, Gate 60 is about accepting limits, Gate 52 is about stillness and focus, Gate 19 is about needs and sensitivity, Gate 39 is about provocation, Gate 41 is about imagination and beginning, Gate 58 is about vitality and the drive to improve, Gate 38 is about fighting for purpose, and Gate 54 is about ambition.

53, 60, 52, 19, 39, 41, 58, 38 and 54. The Root connects to the Sacral, Spleen and Solar Plexus centers through channels.

When defined

A defined Root means you have a consistent source of pressure and drive. You may handle stress steadily and feel able to work toward goals over time. The pressure is part of how you experience life, and it can motivate you.

The practice is to choose what you do with that pressure. A defined Root can push you to keep going even when you need rest. Pausing to check whether a deadline is real or self-imposed helps. Many people find that a regular rhythm of work and rest suits them.

When open/undefined

An open Root means you do not have a fixed source of pressure. You can feel the pressure of others and may be tempted to rush to be rid of it. You might feel a sense of hurry in busy environments, or take on other people's stress.

The gift is flexibility and a sensitivity to the pace of life. The practice is to ask, "Is this pressure mine?" and to build calm into your day. Many people with an open Root find that they work well when they slow down and choose their commitments carefully. You do not have to finish everything right now.

Questions to reflect on

  • Is this urgency mine or did I pick it up?
  • What would it be like to take things at my own pace?
  • How do I respond to stress?
