Center
The Head Center in Human Design
The Head center is the pressure to think, wonder and ask questions. It is where inspiration begins and it holds gates 64, 61 and 63.
The Head center sits at the top of the chart. In Human Design it is described as a source of mental pressure: the urge to wonder, to ask questions and to make sense of things. It does not give you answers. It gives you the spark that sets your mind in motion.
What it governs
The Head is linked with inspiration, curiosity and the restless feeling of "I need to figure this out." Its three gates reflect different flavors of questioning: Gate 64 is about confusion that can turn into insight, Gate 61 is about the inner mystery and a thirst for deeper truth, and Gate 63 is about doubt that drives you to check whether something holds up. Together they feed ideas down to the Ajna center for processing.

When defined
A defined Head center means you have a steady, reliable source of mental pressure and a consistent way of being inspired. You may find that your questions come back to similar themes throughout your life. You can focus on a question for a long time, and you may hold strong curiosity about what feels unresolved.
You may also feel your own pressure to find answers. Learning which questions deserve your energy, and letting go of the rest, tends to make the pressure feel lighter. Other people may feel that you have a clear sense of what is on your mind.
When open/undefined
An open Head center means you do not have a fixed internal source of mental pressure. You can take in other people's questions, doubts and ideas, and sometimes mistake them for your own. Many people with an open Head feel the urge to resolve everything that crosses their path.
The gift here is flexibility and a wide range of curiosity. You may be good at sensing what the room is wondering about. The practice is to choose which questions you actually want to pursue and to let others' pressure pass through. Not every puzzle needs an answer right now.
Questions to reflect on
- Which questions truly belong to me, and which did I pick up from someone else?
- When I feel pressure to decide something mentally, do I really need to decide now?
- What gives me a sense of inspiration without a deadline?
FAQ
Is a defined Head center the same as being smart? No. The Head center is about the pressure to think and be inspired, not about intelligence.
What if my Head is open and I feel overwhelmed by thoughts? Try setting boundaries around information, and ask whether each thought is actually yours. Time in quiet or nature helps many people.
Does the Head center decide for me? No. Decisions come from your authority. The Head offers questions and inspiration.
